Neale Whitaker talks emerging trends to a Brisbane crowd

Neale Whitaker, Editor in Chief of Australia's most elite Design Magazine, Belle, graces the Domayne Store in Fortitude Valley to talk about emerging design styles.

Taking about his observations at the Milan Design week which occurs in April of each year, this week has long become the pivotal point for setting new design trends for the forthcoming 12-18 months – 3 years.  This trends extends to retail, replication of furnishings and accessories and drives the trends seen in magazines.

The key take-away from this years event, was to break down the rules of design.  Be unique, express your individuality and finally its okay to clash colours and textures.

The key trend was there is no trend.  Hone your sprit and soul and build your home based on your individual preferences and eclectic styles reflective of the personalities that live within your home.  Refreshing!

Rebecca Ward & Neale Whitataker - Design @ Domain

So what’s Neals prediction for hot styles coming our way?

1.  The Outdoor Room is THE room to focus on

Outdoor furniture now comes in a vast arrange of options. James Durie and his concept of the 'Outdoor Room' has meant that Australia is leading the way in producing quality, fun outdoor pieces.   Future trends will focus more on outdoor spaces including the investment of quality furnishings for the outside space.   And colour is key.. Try bright blues, oranges and mustard yellow!

Check out The Brown Trading Company's Pineapple cushions for the extra pop of personality for your outdoor space.

2. Green and Blue is hot hot hot

The aqua, green teals, soft mints green is now very hot like the below sofa.

My latest ebay find, this Peacock Blue Chesterfield is totally on brand!

Love the soft mint peas, as emerging in furnishing, accessories and fashion.

3. Tropical Colonial anyway? The tropical colonial look in cushions, prints and wallpaper is popping with a clever infusion of modern styled furnishings to complete the look. Old fashioned prints are now fashionable again with a return to romanticism seen in bedrooms.

Neale was a big fan of this wallpaper used on a display

4. Colour Colour & More Colour

A sneak peak into the Summer Vibes launch shows us that vibrant oranges and blue is hot..

Check out this adaption for a modern boudoir.

 5.  Industrial turning into the Great Gatsbury

Whilst ultra modern styling continues to have its place, so to does the Industrial 'Mad Scientist' style.  What Neale sees next is a return to 1920's -30's glamour, honouring the Great Gatsbury era.  All mirrors, velvet and plush glamour.. Bring it on I say!

A big thank you to Domayne, Fortitue Valley for hosting such as fabulous event.

And thank you to Neale for sharing his observations on emerging design styles.  Check out the November edition of Belle Magazine for a full wrap-up of the 50 hot Design trends coming our way.

I'm in love with... my gorgeous kitchen!

Okay its high time I share one of my projects on my house in Sunny Queensland. When we first moved in 4+ years ago, it was all chunky country furnishings and lino floors not to mention pine cupboard and black and orange bench tops...

Before

After

The hero of the kitchen is the stylish spashback, custom designed by our Glassier by taking an existing wallpaper print, reverse screen printing onto the glass.  We lived with the wallpaper for 6 months before proceeding and now 2 1/2 years later it still looks fresh, contemporary and unique. Its the first thing our guests are always first to comment on.  Our Kitchen Designer now recommends it for her other clients.  Moral of the story... stick true to the vision of your space and find a supplier who can cater for your needs.  It's worth it in the long run.

Follow your instincts...enbrance your own style.. I did and this is my Study

When we first moved into our rambling 1960's home with 5 bedrooms. I couldn't decide what to do with the fifth bedroom and tiny study area.  We eventually knocked down 3 walls, installed glass balustrade, installed plush charcoal carpets and was ready to style the study.

The Chesterfield Settee in Peacock Green is a stunning find from Ebay for only $285.  I've since had 2 offers to buy it, but its simply not for sale as I'm in love with the style and colour of this piece.

I've developed my style palette since studying Design and really challenged myself to not paint the wall white and resisted temptation to have everything aligned in pairs.

Instead I followed my inner style guide and built an inspiration wall, full of personality, presence and enough quirkiness to settle my inner style god.

Here's the results.  I was inspired by the gorgeous Caithlin Wilson Cushion (http://www.caitlinwilsontextiles.com/) from local Australia supplier, Adorne Homewares.

Here's the colour palette... Corel and Aqua.

The prints are by Melbourne Based Artist (Linogirl)  http://www.linogirl.com.au/

And here's that quirkiness I mentioned...
